The Impact of Interior Design on Mood and Mental Health

The Psychology of our
Spaces

Picture
Interior design is not just about creating aesthetically pleasing spaces; it also has a significant impact on our mood and mental well-being. Our homes serve as our private sanctuaries, where we seek solace and rejuvenation after a long day. The way we design and arrange our personal spaces can greatly influence our sense of security, comfort, and emotional energy. In this article, we will explore the psychological effects of interior design and how it can improve our mental health.

Creating Comforting and Supportive Personal Spaces

Picture
Our personal spaces within our homes play a crucial role in various moments of our lives. Whether we are seeking solace after a stressful day at work, looking for a sense of privacy and protection, or simply trying to unwind and recharge, our homes provide the space where we can find emotional support. Just as children create nests in their bedrooms to personalize and create a safe haven, adults also need spaces that comfort and nurture them.

The Link Between Interior Design and Mental Health

Picture
Anxiety and depression are two of the most common mental health issues affecting individuals today. However, recent studies have shown that interior design techniques and approaches can help alleviate stress and depression. The connection between home design and emotional well-being has been recognized for centuries in practices such as the Indian Vastu Shastra and the Chinese Feng Shui. With the rise of neuroscience, scientists are now conducting extensive research on this topic, providing incredible insights into the ability of interior design elements to evoke positive emotional responses.

Harnessing the Power of Sunlight

Picture
Picture
Natural light has a profound impact on our mood and mental state. Sunlight not only brightens up a room but also reduces depression and enhances overall happiness. Studies have shown that a lack of sunlight can trigger feelings of sadness and anxiety. Incorporating more sunlight into our homes can boost our sense of well-being and even increase productivity. In fact, research has found that employees with access to natural light outperform those without sunlight in their workspaces. Therefore, maximizing natural light in our homes can significantly improve our mental health.

Creating Spacious and Serene Environments

Picture
The sense of spaciousness in our homes can greatly affect our mood and mental state. Rooms with higher ceilings have been found to enhance creativity and improve overall mood. However, even rooms with lower ceilings can create a sense of spaciousness when designed correctly. Decluttering our living spaces and adopting a minimalist approach can help create open and airy rooms that promote a sense of calm and relaxation. By organizing furniture, optimizing storage solutions, and utilizing room layouts that facilitate easy navigation and social interaction, we can create mentally healthy spaces that reduce anxiety and feelings of being overwhelmed.

The Therapeutic Power of Plants and Flowers

Picture
Bringing nature indoors through the use of houseplants and flowers can significantly improve our mental well-being. Studies have shown that the presence of plants in our homes improves concentration, memory retention, and reduces stress levels. Houseplants act as natural air filters, improving air quality and increasing oxygen levels. They also add a touch of beauty and tranquility to our living spaces. Flowers, on the other hand, have been found to reduce the likelihood of depression and increase positive emotions. Their calming and relaxing effects can greatly enhance our overall well-being.

Incorporating the Elements: Water, Wind, Fire, Metal, and Earth

Picture
Throughout history, humans have sought to bring the beauty and calming effects of nature into their homes. The ancient practices of Feng Shui and Vastu Shastra celebrate the incorporation of natural elements such as water, wind, fire, metal, and earth. Fountains, pools, mirrors, and reflective surfaces can evoke the soothing qualities of water. Fans, open windows, and fabrics that move quickly can replicate the benefits of wind. Fireplaces and candles provide the warmth and energy associated with fire. Materials such as iron, brass, silver, wood, and stone represent metal and earth. By incorporating these elements into our interior design, we can create harmonious and balanced spaces that promote mental well-being.

The Psychology of Color in Interior Design

Picture
Color is one of the most influential aspects of interior design. Different colors evoke various emotions and can have a significant impact on our mood. Warm colors like red, orange, and yellow are associated with energy, passion, and happiness. Cool colors such as green, blue, and purple, on the other hand, promote calmness, balance, and relaxation. Each color has its own psychological effects and can be used strategically to create specific atmospheres within our homes. It is crucial to find the right balance and harmony of colors to enhance our mental well-being and create spaces that make us feel content and at ease.

The Transformative Power of Art

Picture
Art has long been recognized for its ability to evoke emotions and create a sense of beauty in our lives. Viewing and appreciating art has been shown to have positive effects on our mood and mental health. Whether it is an original masterpiece or an inexpensive print, art can lift our spirits, reduce stress levels, and enhance our overall well-being. The beauty of art lies in its subjectivity, allowing each individual to find their own personal connection and interpretation. By incorporating art and other decorative elements into our homes, we can create spaces that reflect our unique personalities and promote a sense of joy and tranquility.

Simple Tips for Designing a Happy Home

Picture
Delving into the fascinating realm of design psychology opens a door to understanding the intricate interplay between our surroundings and our emotions. The psychology of interior design goes beyond mere aesthetics; it delves into the impact of spatial arrangements, colors, and decor on our mood and well-being. Design psychology explores how thoughtful interior design choices can influence everything from relaxation to productivity. Whether it's the calming influence of a well-chosen color palette or the strategic placement of furniture to enhance flow, embracing the principles of interior design psychology can transform spaces into environments that not only look beautiful but also contribute positively to our mental and emotional experiences. If you want to improve your mood and mental well-being through interior design, there are several simple tips you can follow. Start by decluttering your home and getting rid of unnecessary items that do not bring you joy. A clean and organized space can greatly reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Consider rearranging your furniture to create a more functional and harmonious layout. Maximize natural light by removing heavy curtains or blinds and utilizing mirrors to reflect light. Introduce houseplants and flowers to bring the beauty of nature indoors. Incorporate elements such as water features, wind-inspired fabrics, and fireplaces to create a sense of balance and harmony. Finally, use colors strategically to create the desired atmosphere and consider adding art and other decorative elements that resonate with your personal taste and style.

Conclusion

Interior design goes beyond aesthetics; it has a profound impact on our mood and mental well-being. By creating comforting and supportive personal spaces, maximizing natural light, embracing spaciousness, incorporating plants and flowers, harnessing the power of the elements, understanding the psychology of color, and incorporating art, we can transform our homes into havens of tranquility and promote our overall mental health. Whether you seek professional assistance or embark on your own design journey, remember that a well-designed home can enhance your well-being and bring you joy and contentment. So, start designing your happy home today and reap the benefits of a space that nurtures your mind, body, and soul.

Finding the right furniture to finish up a space can seem daunting at first, but with our expertise, we can help you find all the right pieces for your space! Here are the top furniture trends for 2021!
1. Warm & Snug
Picture
2021 has us going toward spaces with warm vibes and cozy furniture. Expect to see some changes in furniture specifically in gathering areas and nursery type environments. Along with all the new trends coming in 2021 we can almost guarantee that you won't go wrong with some really comfortable seating, and try spicing it up with a vintage piece that’s as comfortable as it looks. Don’t forget vintage furniture helps save the planet and pays homage to past craftsmen!
2. Vintage Vibes
Picture
Retro features have never looked so good! 2021 brings in the new year taking it back to better times with features that are extra vintage and have deeper meaning than just visual. Consider pieces that tell a story about you or something you're passionate about. For example check out the accent wall behind the seating area. It looks old and rustic but blends extremely well. But if you dig deeper it's actually wood from a shipwreck, how cool is that?
3. Statement Headboards
Picture
Go big or go home when it comes to headboards! Get ready to see statement headboards in 2021, this is such a popular trend and changes the feeling of the bedroom! For bedroom redesigns, we love making headboards a statement piece that actually tells someone who is looking at it a deeper meaning of your style and who you are as a person.
4. Quality Craftsmanship
Picture
Consumers have seen the effect that Covid-19 had on small businesses in 2020. This has left them wanting and searching for high-quality pieces of work in their homes. Whether that be customer countertops, cabinets, or a locker design like the photo above, we are most excited about building more custom designs in 2021.
5. Bookshelves
Picture
Ok, so we have light wood ✓ A bookshelf ✓ AND house plants! ✓✓✓ This checks off everything we love about this trend in 2021. Bookshelves can add so much to a room and can make the space a lot more “homey”. You can add plants, books, or photos to add even more to the room.
These are just some of the furniture trends for 2021. As much as we love the design and building process of remodels, seeing the finished results is definitely the best part! Let us help you with all your design needs! Call us today at (330)421-3365, or click the link below.

Top 5 Ways to Increase Your Home Value

2/23/2021

We get it! Doing a major remodel to your home can be a scary venture! Often we see that our clients number one concern when it comes to remodeling is their resale value. That’s why we’re here to help! Leave it to the experts to make sure that your resale value skyrockets. Here are our top five tips on how we can help your resale value go up.

1. Start With a Fresh Coat of Paint

Fresh paint is cost-effective and a simple job that we love to do! Updated paint colors set the mood for the room, whether it be open and bright to relaxing and cozy. Homes that stick with more neutral and up-to-date color schemes have shown to sell for higher than their counterparts.

2. Custom Builds Are All the Rage

Ok now, this one is a no-brainer! Who wouldn’t want custom pieces in their house!? Let’s be real there are TONS of great houses on the market right now. Ask yourself what makes yours unique? Custom builds make you stand out from the crowd and give you one step up against the competition.

3. The Kitchen is Your Money Maker

I know for me and my family the kitchen is the hottest spot in the house. We gather, cook, and eat family meals together there. It’s going to be your money maker. Buyers love a good open, bright and clean kitchen, let’s make sure yours is up to par!

4. The Bathroom is the Kitchens Sidekick

Every hero needs a good sidekick, right? While your kitchen is doing the hero work your bathroom needs to be its sidekick. By that I mean it needs to be the closer. Bathrooms are second to kitchen updates on return on investments so if you want to get a real bang for your buck you really can't have one without the other.
Picture

5. Curb Appeal

When buying a new house everyone loves a home that doesn’t need any remodeling to the inside. How much better would it be if it also had LOADS of curb appeal! I’m talking mowed grass, mulching, flowers, fresh paint, the whole 9 yards! (pun intended). That’s one less thing a buyer needs to worry about and will pay extra for.

We love helping clients bring their visions to life. Whether you're remodeling to fall in love with your home again or remodeling to sell (we might just make you want to stay) we can't wait to help all of your creative visions come to life!
